Embracing Cryptocurrency: A Path to Attracting Business and Enhancing Financial Stability
In an exclusive interview with 1819 News, Alabama State Auditor Andrew Sorrell expressed his strong support for creating a state Bitcoin reserve. As a former state legislator and long-time advocate of cryptocurrency, Sorrell emphasized the numerous benefits that embracing crypto can bring to the state’s economy.
The Pros of Crypto: A Growing Asset Class
Sorrell pointed out that cryptocurrency has become an essential part of modern finance, with its value growing exponentially over the years. "Crypto is here to stay," he said, "and the fight for which states will benefit from it has begun." According to Sorrell, the introduction of Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States has made it easier for states like Alabama to invest in these cryptocurrencies.
Investing in Crypto: A Better Value Proposition
Sorrell highlighted the benefits of investing in cryptocurrency compared to traditional assets such as Treasuries and bonds. "It [cryptocurrency] is also the most rapidly growing asset class (averaging an astounding 55% a year for the last 15 years)," he noted. With inflation rates at 2.7%, Sorrell argued that earning a 4% yield on traditional investments barely breaks even, making crypto a more attractive option.
The Alabama Bitcoin Reserve: A Prudent Decision
Sorrell suggested that the state should create a Bitcoin reserve modeled after the Federal BTC reserve promised by President-elect Donald Trump. With BTC currently in a bull market, Sorrell proposed building up the reserve with monthly buys over two years to ensure a steady supply of cryptocurrency.
Diversifying Away from the US Dollar: A Prudent Move
Sorrell emphasized the importance of diversifying away from the US dollar, which has been the world’s reserve currency for decades. "What happens if the dollar ceases to be the reserve currency of the world? What happens if inflation runs 8% again like it did during the post-pandemic era?" he asked. Sorrell noted that Bitcoin’s value is unaffected by what happens to the US dollar, making it a prudent choice for investment.
Alabama’s Progress on Crypto: A Mixed Bag
While Alabama has made some progress in embracing cryptocurrency, there is still room for improvement. The state passed an act to create the Alabama Blockchain Study Commission in May, which will study crypto regulation, taxation, mining, and other questions. However, a bipartisan bill to prohibit the state from restricting digital asset storage or mining or levying additional taxes on digital assets failed to pass this year.
A Growing Number of Pro-Crypto Politicians
Alabama is home to many pro-crypto politicians on both the state and federal levels. US Senator Tommy Tuberville, for example, is a vocal advocate for cryptocurrency and has been actively involved in promoting its adoption.
Conclusion
Sorrell’s support for creating a Bitcoin reserve highlights the growing recognition of cryptocurrency as a valuable asset class. By embracing crypto, states like Alabama can attract business, enhance financial stability, and diversify their investment portfolios. As Sorrell noted, "The fight for which states will benefit from it has begun," and Alabama is well-positioned to be at the forefront of this movement.
